Energizing Tumbler Ridge: BC Hydro's New Fast Chargers Now Operational

Exciting news: after patiently waiting for their debut, BC Hydro's latest fast charging stations are now operational in Tumbler Ridge!

On Friday, February 23, the BC Hydro crew arrived to dismantle their fence and activate the new chargers. Capable of delivering an impressive 180 kW of energy, the new charger accommodates a range of EVs, from the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which can draw 350 kW, to the Rivian R1T, which can accept 200 kW. While not all vehicles can utilize the full charging speed, the station's versatility ensures compatibility with a diverse array of electric cars.

One standout feature of these fast chargers is their ability to split, enabling simultaneous charging for two vehicles at speeds of up to 90 kW each. This means that, at any given time, up to four cars can conveniently charge their batteries, contributing to a more efficient and streamlined charging experience.

The two chargers differ in that one boasts two Combo Charging System (CCS) connectors, while the other includes a CCS connector and a CHAdeMO connector. This diversity increases accessibility and convenience, catering to various EV models and charging specifications.

Despite the prevalence of Tesla connectors in the EV landscape, Tesla owners need not worry about compatibility issues. While the new chargers predominantly feature CCS and CHAdeMO connectors, Tesla enthusiasts can still charge their vehicles by utilizing an appropriate adaptor, ensuring that the charging infrastructure remains inclusive and accessible to a wide range of electric cars.
